Je’Von Evans was hired by WWE after a show he didn’t even book.
Evans, a 20-year-old, will be one of Trick Williams’ challengers at Heatwave on Sunday (7th July). Williams will defend his title against Evans, Ethan Page and Shawn Spears, in a four-way fatality match. Evans spoke to Sports Illustrated in advance of the match about his rapid rise to NXT fame. He explained how WWE talent scout Gabe Sapolsky noticed him after he competed at GCW For The Culture in WrestleMania Week 2023.
“I wasn’t initially booked, but I asked if I could fill in for my friend who was wrestling on the show. He couldn’t make, so I asked him if I could. Evans said that the promoter told him I could and I said, “Say less.” One of the WWE agents was at the show and we spoke afterwards. “Gabe was at this show and saw me in the elimination match. After I was eliminated, he came to me at the curtain. He said, “We need to exchange information right now.”
Evans wrestled on the independent circuit as Jay Malachi. Evans stated in the Sports Illustrated article that he always wanted to wrestle for WWE and had no backup plan. He began training when he was 13 years old, and “started going insane on the indies” after he graduated from high school.
Evans said, “I have been telling my friends that I am going to be a WWE Wrestler since the third grade.” “My teachers would get angry at me and tell me I needed to have a backup plan, or that I should go back to college. But I didn’t listen.”
Evans told Sports Illustrated he wanted to be the youngest NXT champion in history. Evans also wants to break Randy Orton’s record for the youngest WWE champion ever.
Williams, Evans Page and Spears are scheduled to sign contracts on NXT tonight before their Heatwave match.
