Mercedes Mone joined AEW because she wanted more freedom to work on outside projects.
Mone will face Stephanie Vaquer at Forbidden Doors this Sunday in a title-vs.-title match. Mone’s AEW Strong Women’s Championship and Vaquer’s NJPW TBS Championship are both on the line.
Mone, while doing press for the pay-per view, stopped by WFAN Radio to interview Sal Licata and Brandon Tierney. Mone was asked whether there were restrictions within WWE that prevented her from doing certain things outside of the ring.
Mone replied, “Oh yes, yes.” “That’s a huge reason why I joined AEW. Even getting time off from the WWE to film ‘The Mandalorian,’ was a struggle. Tony [Khan] told me that he would provide whatever I needed, including a private jet, to get from LA to come to shows.
Mone played Koska Reeves, a character from “The Mandalorian,” an animated Disney+ TV show based on the Star Wars franchise.
She told Tierney & Licata she loves the fact that she can use her birth name Mercedes at AEW. Mone was not born Sasha Banks, and cannot claim that name.
Mone said WWE would always have a special place for her. She wants to show fans that there are many amazing women’s wrestlers around the world and help globalize women’s wrestling.
This is the third annual AEW x NJPW event, Forbidden Doors. The PPV will be broadcast from UBS Arena, Long Island, New York.
