NJPW New Beginning adds IWGP Women’s Title Match in todays Wrestling news

NJPW New Beginning Sapporo has added a new match to its lineup.
Mayu Iwatani, who is currently the IWGP Women’s Champion, will defend her title against Mina Shirakawa at the February 23 show. This will be the first night of the two-night event. The news was announced on Sunday at Stardom’s Osaka show.
Shirakawa and Iwatani had previously met in singles competition. Iwatani beat Shirakawa both in the 2021 and 2020 5Star Grand Prix tournaments.
Iwatani won the title of All-Star Grand Queendom in April last year after defeating Mercedes Mone. She has successfully defended the title against Hayashashita and Stephanie Vaquer.
In the Sunday subscriber exclusive, Dave Meltzer noted that Iwatani was the only wrestler with a long-term Stardom contract due to the upcoming film on her life.
Iwatani won the race with AZM, Utami Haashishita and Nanae Tahashi, beating Giulia MIRAI Syrui and Suzu Suzuki.
